WILLIAM PURDON
WILLIAM HENRY PURDON
William Purdon was born in 1876 and grew up at Purdons Lane, O’Connell, New South Wales.
His parents were Henry and Mary Ann Purdon.
William was a farmer at the time of enlistment.
Service:
William tried to enlist in 1915 but was rejected on medical grounds with 'hammer toe'.
He enlisted on 6 January 1917 at the age of 40yrs 6mths.
He joined the 54th Battalion and embarked from Sydney on 24 January 1917.
William was sent to France in August 1917 and was wounded in action on 2 September 1918.
He was invalided to the UK, suffering from a 'shell concussion' on 7 September 1918.
He returned to Australia with a 'shell concussion' on 22 December 1918.
